DIY Planner FAQs

Common questions about planning your build with this tool.

Can I plan a project that uses both wood panels and pipes?

Yes! The tool has two independent tabs — Wood/Panel and Pipe/Tube. You can fill in both tabs for a mixed project (e.g. a workbench with pipe legs and plywood top), then click Export PDF to get one combined report with everything in it.

How does the cut layout algorithm work?

We use a 2D Guillotine bin-packing algorithm (First Fit Decreasing variant). Pieces are sorted by area and placed onto sheets using the tightest-fit free rectangle. If a piece doesn't fit on the current sheet, it spills onto the next. This runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to any server.

What does the Kerf setting do?

Kerf is the width of material removed by the saw blade (typically 2–4mm for a circular saw). The tool automatically accounts for kerf by adding it to each piece's dimensions during placement, so your final cut dimensions will be accurate.

How are screw sizes calculated?

The tool uses industry-standard rules: screw length ≈ 2.5× the thickness of the thinner piece being fastened, rounded up to the nearest 5mm. Gauge depends on application: 6g for fine joinery, 8g for cabinetry, 10g for structural/decking.

What pipe materials are supported?

PVC (plumbing & irrigation), HDPE (poly pipe), GI/Black steel (structural & gas), Conduit (electrical), and Scaffolding/Kee Klamp (display frames & structural). Each material has its own fitting and sealant recommendations.

Is my project data saved?

All data exists only in your browser's memory for the current session. Nothing is uploaded or stored server-side. If you want to keep your project, export it as a PDF before closing the page.
