Should You Compress Images Before Converting to PDF?

Learn how to optimize your image files to ensure your final PDF isn't unnecessarily massive.

The Bloated PDF Problem

If you take 10 photos with a modern smartphone (each around 5MB) and merge them into a PDF, the resulting file will be a massive 50MB. This is impossible to email or upload to most portals.

The Workflow

You have two options when using Tuko:

  • Option A (Pre-Compression): Compress the images using an image compressor first, then combine them using the Image to PDF tool. This gives you the most control over image quality.
  • Option B (Post-Compression): Combine the raw, massive images into a PDF first. Then, run that PDF through Tuko's PDF Compressor using "Smart Mode" to shrink the entire document at once. This is usually the faster method!
